What's the Point of Buying DVDs Anymore?

Yeah, I know I really haven't updated my blog since New Years...sorry.

Today I felt like blogging about my thoughts about DVDs and Netflix, etc.  So we'll reading my Engadget Twitter feed today, I saw the Netflix has once again reached another distribution deal to bring more Fox TV shows again to their instant cue, which in an over all sense is great!  But every time they do this, it makes me wonder why I have continued to buy so many shows on DVD!  For example, they just added the first season of Glee to instant cue.  I won't lie, I bought the DVDs to season 1 (probably won't for season 2 considering the show's change it quality) but the point is, now these discs are gonna just sit on my shelf as I can access Netflix on practically all my screens so why bother with my standard def discs for that matter.

It's honestly getting to the point that I really question why I'm buying anything.  Now there are some series that I was initially feeling the same way about (Lost, 24, Family Guy) but I realize that any of these shows will probably not be on Netflix forever and for shows I REALLY like it won't hurt to have my own copy down the road.  But still, I've decided to more or less start following the following rules when it comes to buying discs now:

 I'll consider getting it:
-I'm getting a $4 bargin deal from work
-If it's a movie that warrants the whole Blu Ray collector's pack (ie the new Tron release next week)
-I'm like one item away from completing a set I've already started

Otherwise, I might as well WAIT because it will probably show up on Netflix sooner or later.  I know this more applies to TV Shows than theatrical released movies as those take longer to show up instantly (if at all) but still.  On the flip side, I am very excited that Netflix continues to expand and look forward to watching many new shows because of it!  (The press release "claimed" The Wonder Years is being added as well...I'll believe it when I see it.  The only reason I don't think it's an April Fools joke though is everything else they promised did appear on the site this morning!)

Back in LA

Well, I'm back in Los Angeles...well I've technically been back for almost a day, but finally had a chance to sit down and write.  The resolutions are starting to come along.  The main one I've been paying attention to is the eating one.  These first two days have been tough to keep within my daily calorie limit, but they have also not been typical days.  If anything, the iPhone has been helping to point out how quickly I go through things and today was certainly better the yesterday.  When I return to a regular routine tomorrow, I think I can keep things better in check.

It's been gloomy since I've been back.  Been running around helping people today, so this has been my first chance to sit down and catch my breath.  Tomorrow everything goes back into action.  Everyone comes back from vacation and back to responsibility.  I miss home, but I think it will feel like I never left after tomorrow, haha.  I'm sure I'll have more to reflect on later this week.  Just wanted to check in.  Until next time!

Happy New Year!! Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my new blog.  I decided that starting this year, I wanted to just keeping a blog online to collect and share some of my thoughts in life.  Now, because this is public, I'm still figuring out exactly how to go about doing this.  Obviously I won't get into anything from my professional life, and to much of a degree my private life as well.  I don't want to directly name specific people that may not want to be mentioned, etc.  I guess it will be a chance to talk about some of my broader perspectives on things.

For this entry I want to focus on my New Year's resolutions.  Now I know what you're probably thinking, who really keeps their resolutions?  I want to be realistic about this.  I'm trying to not be super extreme or super specific about them.  For example, I'm not going to pick an exact weight I want to be at, or say I will be at the gym 7 days a week no exceptions.  It's just not going to happen and when it doesn't it will probably discourage me more from keeping the resolution up at all if it is that intense.

I've decided to give my goals for 2011 a theme:  Clean Up My Life!  I've separated this into 3 categories:

1) Clean up my body!  For one, I am going to continue to have a solid gym schedule during the week, but be reasonable with it.  In the last month or so before my holiday break, I finally made the effort to start going to the gym on my way to work in the morning.  It involves getting up at 5AM.  If I have a good reason to be up later than normal the night before, than I'm not going to go, it's not worth messing up my sleep, but if I have nothing important to do the night before, then I need to go to bed and get up early the next morning.  I used to be better at going when I lived closer to the gym and I can't let this stop me.  Cleaning my body also means eating better.  My dad introduced me to an iPhone app that helps you track what you eat each day, and he's been using it and he says it's working.  I'm not going to go completely organic or anything, but I'm going to be more conscience of what I'm taking in each day.

2) Clean up my physical space!  If you know me, then you know that sometimes my desk can get a little messy...ok a lot of the time!  I want to end each day before I leave work or before I go to bed by making sure my desk or room is put away and in good order.  If I make an effort to do this everyday, it will stay in order.  It's funny,  I'm so anal about how I organize my files in the computer, I need to implement that structure to my actual life.

3) Clean up my assets!  Now I am not going to disclose any of my financial numbers here, but I do think I treat myself to nice things a little too often.  Not that that's bad in moderation, and not that I'm spending out of my means, but if I saved more, I'd have even more later on.  I look at my life and think that I might want to start putting down roots somewhere (don't get me started on where, a discussion for another day) but I want to feel better about doing that when the time comes and be able to enjoy it.  I'm going to try to spend on things I need for the most part, but still enjoy life as well!

Hopefully I'll be able to keep these to some degree.  I'm going to try to reflect on how this is going throughout the year.  Personally, I'm ready for a good year.  I think there's going to be some changes in my life, not exactly sure what they're going to be yet, which is the scary part, but hopefully in the long run they will prove beneficial and lead to better things!  I hope everyone reading this takes a few moments early on this year to reflect on what they want to get out of this year.  It's a new chapter for everyone if you want it to be.  I certainly have lots of goals, this is the broad version, but I have many personal things I want to achieve this year and hopefully I will do them.  One is this blog, so while I may not be here everyday, hopefully I'll be here a good amount to comment on my life.

Until next time, Happy New Year.  Good Night/Good Morning!
